Darkened Depths

Sunrise over the Grand Canyon. My favorite part of this isn't the sky or colors, but rather the series of barely-visible ridgelines in the darkened canyon.

Canyon Snowstorm

A snowstorm blowing through the bottom of the Grand Canyon. The day went from warm and sunny to snowing very quickly. You could watch the clouds flow up the canyon like a low-speed flood.

4 Wild & Crazy South Africans

We spotted this van in the Watchtower parking lot at the Grand Canyon. Apparently this was the last of their stops - hopefully they found those girls they were looking for too.

Pink Is Power

Graffiti on the back of the derelict Twin Arrows Trading Post. No idea what it means though - girl biker gang maybe?

UPDATE: Apparently this is by a well known artist, Buff Monster. Thanks Shannon!

Wasteland Gas #2

Another shot from the abandoned Twin Arrows Trading Post. I think it looks post-apocalyptic, like it belongs in "Mad Max" or a zombie movie.

Wasteland Gas

Another shot from the abandoned Twin Arrows Trading Post. I think it looks post-apocalyptic, like it belongs in "Mad Max" or a zombie movie. Although it probably looks about right for Fallout 3, if you're a video gamer.

Monday Morning News

Unlimited free coffee at Einstein’s proved to be too much to resist, so I sipped coffee and read a good chunk of the paper this morning. A few of the interesting tidbits…

Tasty Scotch Ale

Great Divide started brewing a scotch ale not too long ago. Another scotch ale, Old Chub, is one of my personal favorites, so I’ll definitely have to try it. They have a release party on Friday which I will unfortunately not be able to attend.

Nobody Told the DEA

Apparently nobody told the DEA about Colorado’s medical marijuana laws. Or more likely they just don’t care much. Either way, they’re still arresting growers. I don’t really have a dog in the fight, since I’m neither growing nor using the sticky green stuff. But I would think the DEA would have something better to do than start a states’ rights fight.

In related news, the long-abandoned gas station at 20th & Lawrence is being renovated into a dispensary, according to a banner on the front. I wonder if they’ll still sell gas and Twinkies too.

Still Practicing

The military has started to draw down the Haiti relief force. Thus proving that despite what Hugo Chavez may think, we’re not an imperial power. Or maybe we are but we’re just really, really bad at it. Either way, Hugo’s still a jackass.

Twin Arrow

This one is left over from our road trip around the 4 corners area last March. There's a section of I-40 that parallels the old Route 66, which is full of derelict landmarks. We spotted this from the freeway and came back around to check it out.

It turned out to be one of the eponymous arrows at the Twin Arrow gas station. The station had been abandoned for some time. It was in total disrepair, and had been thoroughly vandalized as well. However, I did find some reports that the arrows themselves have been overhauled, so they may now be in better shape than when I saw them.

Renewal

Flowers growing between the branches and needles of a down pine tree.

This was taken last spring at Mt Falcon.

Happy Prospector

Wendy & I did a little snowshoeing near Breckenridge on Friday. The trail took us past a few old mine shafts. And there’s only one thing you can do at a mine – dance like a happy prospector! Of course this still photo doesn’t quite do it justice, you really should see the video. The first happy prospector dancer was Walter Huston, but if you want to see the best happy prospector dance ever you need to check out how my former coworker Andy does it.
