Outside Vegas

Most visitors to Vegas never see anything outside of the Strip or downtown. But the area around Las Vegas is well worth visiting as well, and not very far away either. On our last trip there we took a couple trips out to Red Rocks Canyon Park. No relation to the park in Denver, but it is just about the same distance from downtown.

There was a good amount of rain on the deserts near Las Vegas during the winter, so the wildflowers made a strong showing. Or at least so I'm told -- I've never seen it before. It seemed like a lot of flowers for a desert though.

So if you find yourself in Vegas completely bored with nothing at all to do, or, more likely, just cannot drink and gamble any more, head out to Red Rocks and take a look around.

Black & White Mountain

We took a quick hike up Green Mountain yesterday. But apparently I'm not in a very colorful mood, so it's not very Green.

Lipgloss

I was fortunate enough to be involved in Christian's photo shoot last Saturday. I'm still working through my shots from it - I hope to have them out within the next week. I also saw some of Christian's shots, and I can say for sure that he'll have some great shots once he's done with post-processing.

In the meantime, here's a small "taste" of things to come.

I Heart Targus

Back in 2003 I bought a Targus laptop backpack to go with a new laptop. It turned out to be an excellent all-purpose backpack, so I've used it a lot over the years. In fact, it's seen almost daily use since then toting clothes, books, cameras and occasionally even a laptop. For a while I was routinely carrying over 40 pounds in it to work and back. That backpack was a real workhorse. It actually outlasted the laptop I bought it for, and handled the 17" replacement laptop quite handily.

A few weeks ago it finally had it's first failure. One of the stitches holding the strap buckle failed. My old friend was rendered a one-strap only backpack, a sort of awkward messenger bag.

After searching in vain for a local repair shop I discovered that Targus offers a lifetime warranty on their bags. So I mailed my faithful backpack off to them. Just today I received a shiny new replacement, even better than the original. The customer service along the way was exemplary -- they never gave me a minute's trouble and even notified me when they received my bag in the mail and sent a new one.

So here's to you, Targus. You rock!

Subprime Mortgage Debacle: How did it happen?

All is explained in this slideshow. Despite the craptastic art, I'm told this is a reasonably accurate account of what happened. Not that it's a big surprise. Everyone got greedy, then everyone got burned. Nothing new there.

Cold Creek

I caught this image from a bridge in Breckenridge. I just love the giant, fluffy pillows of snow and the texture on the sides of them.

Fotunate

All the fortune cookies I've ever gotten were fairly general. "You will have financial success", "A new person will enter your life soon", "The bill will be larger than you expected", that sort of thing.

But last night's fortune said "You will inherit a gold mine in Africa". That fortune writer must've had a really good crystal ball!

Anybody else get a really specific or just plain strange fortune?
